At their most basic, no-cost updates remind us that our homes are living, breathing places. They’re meant for play and enjoyment, and they don’t need to stay entirely the same in all the years we’re living within their walls.

Most of us have at least one room in our home we’ve set up in a particular way without ever considering whether it’s optimized for how we actually live. We decide it is the only way the room works and then move on. This kind of rigid mindset can keep us from making changes that would improve our experience in our home. I love the idea of being creative and fluid in the way we think about furniture layout and decor styling. It can really set the tone for how we interact with our spaces in our everyday life.

A Main Floor Refresh That Cost Zero Dollars

This November, Joe and I spent one day entirely rearranging the furniture in a few of the rooms on the main floor of our house. We rearranged the peach room and the foyer, and also did a partial refresh in the family room. We moved the dining table and chairs from the foyer to the peach room, and made the foyer into a sitting area. In the family room, we swapped out the red rug for a blue and green patterned rug (a vintage find from Chairish), and added a fresh seating area with two matching chairs.

The new layouts, particularly in the peach room and foyer, greatly improve the flow of movement through the main floor. These updates also provide much more flexibility for what we can do in each space, both when we’re hanging out as a family and entertaining. The peach room is my favorite space in the house, and I’m grateful we’ve been using it a lot more since we did this room refresh in November. It served us well through the craziness of the holiday season.
